The Sheep 02:24
Recline and panic As the cabin lights go black. The noise the jet made - JFK to Auckland in one day - The sheep don't like that. We skipped the service. You got too overwhelmed. Because you'd flown all this way to see the city And meet the family And now they're dying, And the downtown noise show Just sounds so alive. Flights back home. Head on the window. Ear plugs, eye masks, But the noise keeps coming back. Ba ba ba ba ba ba.
2.
Whiritoa 02:05
Running wires, clean white room. Clean white room and you. Brothers, sisters, grass pant stains, Out at play without you. The nurses know you here. Whiritoa, spare machine. New wires but the same clean. Brothers, sisters, now middle-aged, Out at play on a wedding day You knew would come. But would you live that long? For a while, the nurses all said no, But here you are - An oar in each hand, rowing your daughter up. I guess you showed them all!
3.
Pigeon Trap 02:56
You know me, and I know you. We could entertain ourselves all afternoon. Imitating geese - the height of comedy. South Island - finally. Old Bolex camera clicking, "It's just noisy that way." That's what I always say to the TSA. We gotta get up, the sun's setting now, Inexplicably the whole city's closing down. Hagley Park is empty, all the cars are dark. The riverwalk's deserted, all the geese are gone. Canterbury Garden, and Tūranga too, The pigeon trap is just scaffolding and shockproof. They rebuilt this city from the ground up. They rebuilt this city, but it's never done. Seven thirty and the whole square's hushed. I was filming at the fault line, at the hole. You were imitating pigeons, And I gotta say they all looked right at home. The birds don't mind the Bolex wind - What's new when you're always due for repair? Coo.

Hoiho 01:45
Fuck, I love penguins but they're dying. Fuck, they need caring and attention in Dunedin. Just hold on, I'm coming down. You are safe now, please be strong. Just hold on.
5.
The Surf 01:48
Full force wave breakneck tuck Further in the surf for warmth. Shivershiver like capi froth, Like we don't already live in New York. Learning how to dive from Imitating your mother's form. Writerwriter, the line is done. Margin's maxed, and I've already released it. I am coming in With my whole head wet.

about

“Penguin Classics” began as a document of traveling New Zealand and wound up a wistful meditation on growing up and growing apart. It is also Trochee Trochee’s first release since Stress, Unstress to be assembled as a duo, an intimate process reflected by sparse acoustic / electric arrangements and the chirping birds of Von King Park. Boasting odes to local fauna and a sonic palate indebted to Kiwi groups The Bats and The Chills, consider this our unabashed indie pop era.

"Penguin Classics" is the third EP and twelfth release overall from Trochee Trochee.
